The Craft

Every Gombi toy starts as a block of ivory wood, locally grown and naturally light in weight. An artisan mounts it on a traditional lathe — many still foot-powered, passed down through families for generations — and shapes it by hand, eye, and feel. No two pieces come out exactly identical, because no machine is doing the work.

Once shaped, the piece is finished with natural vegetable dyes rather than synthetic paint, giving Channapatna toys their distinctive soft colour and gentle sheen. The final step is almost always a hand-painted face or detail, added freehand by the artisan.

This is slow work. A single artisan might finish only a few dozen pieces in a day, depending on the complexity of the toy. We think that's exactly the point — these aren't mass-produced. They're made by people who've spent years, sometimes decades, perfecting this exact craft.
